HISTORY OF MU XI CHAPTER

During the early to mid-1970’s, the African American population of the western suburbs of Chicago grew considerably. This occurrence is especially significant because many of the individuals who chose to relocate to this area were OMEGA MEN.

In early 1977, there were at least eighteen (18) financially active OMEGA MEN who had chosen to reside in the western suburbs. This group of brothers, like most other OMEGA MEN, developed a close association and determined that the work of Omega had to be done within their various communities. More importantly, they understood that the work must be done in an organized manner and under the banner of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Thus, the decision was made to petition the Supreme Council of the Fraternity to establish a graduate chapter within the borders of the western suburbs. This petition was acknowledged with a favorable response from the Supreme Council.

A meeting was held at the home of Bro. W. Frank Rodgers in Lisle, Illinois on February 12th with fourteen (14) brothers present. At this meeting, the report of the Finance Committee was remitted and the nominations for the chapter’s inaugural officers were presented.

On March 11, 1977, Mu Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., was duly chartered by the Supreme Council. The actual signed and sealed charter of the chapter named the eighteen (18) brothers as charter members of Mu Xi.

The newly formed chapter celebrated its inception on Friday, April 29, 1977, when it hosted “Charter Night” to acknowledge its rightful place in the history of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. This event was held at Indian Lakes Country Club located in Bloomingdale, Illinois. It was at this forum where the following brothers were installed as the first officers of Mu Xi:
